The issue of step mothers

The allegations made by the Mutukudzi girls are quite disturbing.  Yes, there are always two sides to a story, but the issue of step mothers is prevalent in our society. The issue of blended families is admirable from afar but there are so many complexities involved.

Most children have suffered abuse in the hands of step mothers but the world usually gives a blind eye. We do not realise the psychological trauma that these children suffer and this goes beyond childhood. According to the Freudian Theory, human behavior is influenced by unconscious memories, thoughts, and urges; and that is why we see some of them ‘acting out’ even beyond childhood. This is what happens if professional help is not sought.

Am not defending step mothers but I also want to look at it from another angle. Some of them might also need professional help because they are hurting and they need to heal. Most women are vindictive by nature, so any ‘misunderstanding’ with their husbands, they will take it out on the husbands children because they are the easiest targets.  We all know that marriages are not easy – chakapfukidza dzimba matenga.  What triggered Daisy’s action? Samanyanga had children outside their marriage; could this have been the trigger for Daisy? But then again, there is no justification for abusing your husband’s children.

Also, men are not innocent in all this because by keeping quiet and not condemning the abuse, they are enabling it!
